Klepper Hahn & Hyatt is seeking a licensed civil engineer who can prepare civil engineering and construction designs & drawings, under direct supervision, for all phases of a project, utilizing Autodesk AutoCAD software. Prepare SWPPPs, analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, and other information to plan projects of all levels of complexity and create design deliverables.  Visit job sites to collect information and gain field experience, broaden your background and develop practical engineering skills.

Responsibilities: 

Communication

  • Documents and communicates design, scope, and schedule issues with the Senior Project Engineer.

Proposal

  • Reviews the scope of work contained in the project proposal and communicates any problems complying with it.
  • Prepares contract documents and general notes for bidding for review by the Senior Project Engineer.

Design

  • All members of the design team share responsibility for the design, however, since the Principal provides the design certification, he/she can direct changes in the design as deemed necessary.
  • Consults with the senior project engineer on the design and details of a project and will not make changes to an established and approved design without Senior Project Engineer approval.
  • Establishes schematic designs and project development of foundation and framing schemes, connections, structural details, and structural systems for the project. Works with the project drafter to prepare the drawings.
  • Performs complex calculations, design, and analysis of structural members and overall framework to meet the requirements of BCNYS and other governing codes and standards, that include snow loads, live loads, wind loads, and seismic forces.
  • Resolves problems that fall outside the standards or codes of practice for professional engineering that have no obvious solution and require abstract thinking and originality in analysis to formulate suitable models.
  • Creates calculation sheets that are neat, legible, and kept together, with a front sheet (for large projects) showing loading and design assumptions.

Specifications

  • Prepares project specifications based on Firm specification standards and ensures documents are reviewed by the Senior Project Engineer. 

Client Relations

  • Maintains client contact for everyday design communication.
  • Ensures decisions and significant information communicated with a client is documented and forwarded to other members of the design team.

Construction Phase

  • Tracks addenda items, construction submittals, and progress of the construction, and communicates significant developments or potential construction phase problems to the Senior Project Engineer or Project Manager in a timely manner.
  • Reviews structural shop drawings.
  • Conducts construction-phase site visits to project and communicates observations, project status, field conditions, conformance to design specifications, and construction phase issues to the Senior Project Engineer. Prepares a comprehensive report after each visit.
  • Develops and maintains contractor relations and verification that structural construction meets the design intent.

Professional Licensure

  • Responsible for maintaining standards of professional certification and may be required to stamp and sign documents with appropriate Professional Engineering Seal.

Marketing

  • Executes marketing activities that are consistent with the mission and vision of the Firm such as: presentations, articles, involvement with local professional organizations, existing client development, and identification and initiation of contact with prospective new clients. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering is required.
  • Professional Engineer license is required.
  • Proficient in CAD programs with the ability to produce hand-drawn perspectives, plans and sections.
  • Must be proficient in a Windows environment, including word processing, spreadsheet and database software. Must be able to learn quickly to use the design programs of the office.
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such a level as is determined by KHH’s sole discretion.
  • Must be available and willing to work such overtime per day or per week as KHH determines is necessary or desirable to meet business needs.

Pay is up to $85,000 per year.
