Project Name: SUNY Upstate Medical
Center Vertical Expansion

Project Owner: State University
Construction Fund - New York State

Project Cost: $100 Million

The Upstate Medical Center “Vertical Expansion” consists of the addition of five floors to the existing medical center. A complex series of transfer trusses and steel framing kept loads light enough to realize the addition.

As Special Inspector, KHH is responsible for coordinating inspections required by the Building Code of New York State. These inspections included foundation installation (caissons, strip and spread footings), structural steel installation (steel erection placement, bolted and welded moment connections, composite shear studs, metal roof and floor deck), concrete reinforcing placement and concrete placement (caissons, grade beams, walls, slabs on grade and metal deck) and reinforced masonry construction (masonry erection, reinforcing, embed placement and grouting).

KHH and our inspection agents provide an onsite verbal report to the construction team, followed by a written report within 48 hours of each inspection visit. Any project deficiencies are identified onsite and in the written reports. Written reports are distributed to the construction team (construction manager, contractors), design team (architect, engineer) and to the project owner.

KHH Inspection Services Department

The KHH Inspection Services Department was formed in 2004 to address our clients’ needs for construction inspection services of structural work as required by the Building Code of New York State. The Department provides inspection services for construction projects in the Central New York area. KHH offers these services for our own projects and for projects designed by others.

We provide the following specific services as either Special Inspector or as an Inspection Agent working under the Special Inspector:

Cast-In-Place Concrete Inspection - including pre-placement preparation, reinforcing inspection, mix verification, onsite water control, placement and curing inspection

Continuous Slab-On-Grade Inspection to reduce cracking and curling

Precast Concrete Inspection - fabrication, installation, grouting, and topping

Masonry Inspection - mortar and grout placement, reinforcement, flashing, weeps, joints, and workmanship

Steel Inspection - fabrication shop review, field erection, connection inspection, and field modification review

Structural Wood Inspection - verification of lumber species and grade, inspection of engineered wood elements, connection inspection, plate-connected wood truss fabrication, installation and bracing inspection.font>

Inspection Agent

As Inspection Agent, our qualified inspectors visit the project site and prepare inspection reports, including deficiency reports, for review by the Special Inspector. Deficiency reports are followed by a second inspection to assure project requirement compliance.

Special Inspector

As the designated Special Inspector, we work with other inspection and testing agents to provide full inspection and testing services for specific construction projects. These services include, in addition to the inspection services, compilation of other agents’ reports, periodic distribution of reports to the project Owner, Contractor, Code Enforcement Official, and, if requested, the Architect. At the completion of construction, we will prepare a Final Report of Construction Inspection, required for issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy.
