Penguin Coast Exhibit, Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnett Park, Syracuse, New York
2005 Silver Award — Excellence in Concrete Design and Installation
American Concrete Institute — Central New York Chapter
This $2.8 million open-air exhibit was constructed to resemble the rocky South American coastline for a flock of Humboldt penguins that were brought from other U.S. zoos to establish a new breeding colony. In addition to ensuring the survival of this endangered species, the attraction entertains and educates the viewing public. Built almost entirely with concrete and masonry products, the exhibit includes a 50,000-freshwater pool, viewing panels for submersion and interior views, a Husbandry Building and a Life Support System Building, plus a viewing pavilion. Concrete was carved to simulate rock by specialists in this type of artistic application.
