Colgate University East Hall and West Hall Facade Restoration, Hamilton, New York
2003 American Concrete Institute of Central New York — Design & Installation
Silver Award for Excellence in Masonry Restoration
This project involved the dismantling and restoration of parapet gable walls for two of the oldest buildings on the Colgate University campus. East Hall was built circa 1833, and West Hall was constructed earlier, around 1827. The poor condition of the parapet walls made them susceptible to collapse in high winds, and other portions of the facades had degraded due to water infiltration and freeze/thaw cycles. This restoration project used a natural hydraulic lime mortar, which allows moisture that does get into the wall to evaporate through the mortar joints rather than through the stone. The KHH team also salvaged as much of the original stonework as possible.
