St. Matthews Church Tower Rehabilitation, East Syracuse, New York
2002 Gold Award — Excellence in Masonry Restoration
American Concrete Institute, Central New York Chapter
St. Matthews Church is an imposing structure faced in Gouverneur Marble. It was designed in 1915 by renowned local architects Archimedes Russell and Melvin L. King. Work on the facades of the building was staged over several years, beginning in 1998 when a bulge in the stone of the north tower was observed. KHH, together with Viau Construction, determined that water had seeped behind the exterior stone from a water table above and had pushed the stone out from the backup brick masonry. Thus began a sequence of work to rehabilitate and restore both towers and domes of this impressive landmark.
