Project Name: Crouse College Facade Restoration

Project Owner: Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York

Project Cost: $3 Million

Syracuse University’s John C. Crouse College of Fine Arts is a beautiful brownstone building designed in 1888 by architect Archimedes Russell. Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt was selected to restore the masonry facade, stained glass and double-hung windows, and the copper gutter system.

Traditional 19th century materials were used in combination with modern materials and techniques to restore this wonderful building.  We matched the original mortar materials when repointing, lime putty for back pointing, and a Portland cement/hydraulic lime blend for pointing mortar, using a grapevine joint. A natural hydraulic lime mortar was used at all cap stone and stone ledge joints.

Crawford & Stearns Architects were consultants for the window restoration, and Mesick Cohen Wilson Baker Architects were consultants for the copper gutter system. The masonry restoration won a Silver Award for Excellence in Masonry Design and Restoration from the American Concrete Institute of Central New York.

KHH Building Envelope Systems Division

KHH Building Envelope Systems, launched in 2004, is a Division of Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt. Building Envelope Systems (BES) encompass specific elements of the building separating the interior from the exterior. These include masonry and mortars for both historic and newer buildings; roofing systems; and waterproofing, water-shedding, and damp-proofing barriers.

The Division Manager is Toby Nadel, an Emeritus member of the American Institute of Architects, as well as a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials, the Construction Specifications Institute, and the Roofing Consultants Institute. Toby directs roofing projects within the division. Richard L. Applebaum, P.E., principal and president of the firm, manages the masonry projects. Many projects are a collaborative effort between roofing and facade, since many facade problems stem from roof leaks.

The Division offers the following services:

Design and Construction Administration

KHH BES Division specializes in the design of thermal and moisture protection systems for wall and roof assemblies. This work includes the coordination of critical deliverables, development of cost estimates, facilitation of bidding, project scheduling, administration of contracts and construction quality control reviews.

Evaluation

Our professional services include inspections, documentation, testing, analysis of, and reporting for, wall and roof assemblies. Our evaluations give consideration to moisture and vapor flow, air transport, material conditions, maintenance requirements, thermal performance, code conformance, sustainability, life cycle and construction cost.

Historic Restoration

Our personnel are highly experienced in the evaluation, design and construction administration of historic wall and roof assemblies. This work draws on our unique understanding of the structural dynamics of historic buildings and our specialized knowledge of masonry wall construction and mortars, especially mortars used in historic applications. Our restoration work includes the rehabilitation and replication of historic metal, slate and clay tile roof assemblies.

Forensic Services

Our experienced registered design professionals provide forensic reporting and expert witness services to the legal and insurance industries. Our intimate knowledge of all types of buildings makes us uniquely qualified to assist with related cases.
